Can you imagine a district named after a temple? Here in Chengdu, the Wuhou District takes its name from the renowned Wuhou Temple. This district isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a living testament to the rich history of the Three Kingdoms period. Wuhou District is more than just the Wuhou Temple. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine. The district also encompasses the bustling Jinli Street, a vibrant recreation of a Qing Dynasty commercial area. Imagine strolling through streets echoing with the spirit of ancient merchants. Cuqiao, a historic area within the district, served as a vital trading post along the Southern Silk Road. It was a hub for the silk trade, giving the area its name, which translates to “Cocoon Bridge.” Wuhou District’s history dates back to the Qin Dynasty. It belonged to Chengdu County in ancient times. Centuries later, the district witnessed the death of Liu Bei, the first emperor of the Shu Han Kingdom, in 223 AD. He was buried in the Huiling Mausoleum, located right here in Wuhou District. A temple was erected to honor him. Later, a separate temple dedicated to Zhuge Liang, his esteemed advisor, was built nearby. These two temples eventually merged, forming the Wuhou Temple we know today. In 1990, the city of Chengdu underwent a reorganization. The area surrounding the temple was officially designated as Wuhou District, solidifying the temple’s important role in the identity of this area. Wuhou District is more than just historical relics. It’s a vibrant community with modern subdistricts. It holds within it the echoes of empires, the whispers of silk traders, and the legacy of brilliant strategists. Wuhou District stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Chengdu.
