Imagine a time when the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne was simply the Iserbrook-Kaserne. It stood as a testament to a rising military power.

Today we explore the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne. This military complex has witnessed significant historical shifts. It began its life in 1935. The Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne initially served as a base for Luftwaffe’s anti-aircraft units.

Let’s journey back to the mid-1930s. Germany was rearming. The Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne emerged from the grounds of the former Landrat Scheiff Hospital in Hamburg-Iserbrook. This transformation marked a significant shift. The Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne transitioned from healthcare to military readiness.

After World War II the British Rhine Army occupied it. The Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne became known as Reading Barracks. Various units of the Labour Service used it.

In 1957, the Bundeswehr started to reclaim the site. By April 1, 1958, the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne was fully under German control again. Since 1965, it has carried the name of Friedrich Ebert. He was the first president of the Weimar Republic.

Many Bundeswehr units have been stationed here. The Bundeswehr Technical School has been here since 1958. The Hamburg State Command also calls the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne home. The Bundeswehr Leadership Academy was temporarily located here. For almost four decades, the Logistics School of the Bundeswehr was the primary occupant.

Several parts of the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne are under historical protection since 2013. They reflect the architectural style of the era. Some buildings date back to the early 1900s. They were originally part of the hospital complex. The building substance remains largely unaltered. It showcases the typical architectural details of its time.

Even the service apartments at Lachmannweg and Osdorfer Landstrasse, built with the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne, are protected.

Two more Bundeswehr barracks are near the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne. The Generalleutnant Graf von Baudissin Barracks is about 2.5 km away. The Clausewitz Barracks is approximately 1 km away as the crow flies. The now-closed mobilization support point Sülldorf was about 3 km away.

The Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne stands as a reminder of Hamburg’s complex past. It is a place where military history and architectural preservation intersect. As we conclude our visit note the buildings and their stories. They echo through time within the Reichspräsident-Ebert-Kaserne.
