The question hung in the air as we stood before the sturdy, square-shaped Svaneke Fyr. Constructed in 1920, this lighthouse has stood watch over the eastern coast of Bornholm for nearly a century. It’s a beacon of maritime history, built following a tragic shipwreck that claimed the lives of three sailors.
The Svaneke Fyr is a beautiful, if unusual, sight. Its base is solid Nexø granite, while the tower itself is built from warm-toned sandstone. Imagine the lonely vigils of the lighthouse keepers, the rhythmic crashing of waves against the shore their only companion. The rhythmic pulse of the light, visible for 19 nautical miles, guided countless ships safely past treacherous waters.
The lighthouse even had a foghorn, its mournful cry piercing the fog to warn approaching vessels. The keepers and their families lived onsite, the lighthouse a self-contained world against the elements. Today, Svaneke Fyr stands silent. Its light was extinguished in 2010, the building sold into private ownership. But its presence is still strong, a reminder of a time when life on this windswept coast was both perilous and beautiful.
