Heard of way signs that whisper tales of faith and remembrance? Here at the Rote Marter, we find ourselves standing before such a monument. These markers often stood at sites of severe accidents or crimes. They frequently served as route markers. Thus, they were precursors to signposts and milestones.

The Rote Marter is located in the Markwald east of Röttenbach. Today, this is a state forest and a European bird sanctuary. It is one of the region’s many centuries-old red Marters. A stone bench often called a rest stone accompanies it. This also served to set down heavy loads.

It stands by the hiking parking lot. The crossroads of the Röttenbach-Baiersdorf road is nearby. So is the Rennweg, once important for transmitting news. It runs from Alterlangen or Dechsendorf towards Heroldsbach or Bamberg.

The name Marter prompts reflection on Jesus’s martyrdom on the cross. Many of these Marters were painted red. About 40 others are known in West Germany alone.

A car accident on the Baiersdorf road damaged the old rest stone in 1987. It shattered. The replacement was placed slightly away from the road, next to the Marter.

Another Rote Marter, made of oak, stands in the Donnerleite area of Gasseldorf. It was once coated with ox blood. Local lore says that Anna Maich, an honorable maiden, was cutting barley in the Wolfsschere field. It was a hot day. She stayed until dusk. A robber attacked her at a crossroads on the Donnerleite. He assaulted her. Anna defended herself. She injured the attacker with her sickle. Enraged, he took the tool and fatally wounded her. She bled to death. Her family searched for her when she did not return home. They found her body at dawn. To commemorate this crime, they erected the Rote Marter. Simon Weidinger recorded this account in January 2004.

These monuments remind us of faith, remembrance, and history. The Rote Marter stands as a testament to the stories etched into our landscape.
