Have you ever wondered why a neighborhood in Philadelphia was named after a river in Pennsylvania? Juniata is a vibrant community in North Philadelphia, named after the Juniata River that flows through the state. It’s part of the Susquehanna River system, which connects the neighborhood to the history of the region.

The neighborhood was mostly farmland before the 1920s. The first row houses appeared in the mid-1920s, near Castor Avenue and Luzerne Street. The western area of Juniata, around I and Cayuga Streets, developed in the ‘50s. The neighborhood was initially a working-class Irish American community. But over the last two decades, it has transitioned to a largely middle-class Puerto Rican and Dominican community.

Juniata is a well-connected community. The Erie-Torresdale Station is a convenient stop on the Market-Frankford Line, offering access to public transportation. Many shops and businesses are located along Castor Avenue, Hunting Park, and Erie Avenue. One of the notable landmarks is the Carl Mackley Houses, now apartments, built in ‘35.

Juniata has a diverse population. It was known for its German bakeries and delicatessen/grocery stores and Jewish grocery and drug stores in the ‘20s and ‘30s. The community spirit remains strong. The residents take pride in the neighborhood’s rich history and multicultural identity. Take some time to explore this lively neighborhood; you won’t be disappointed!
