Once, a small Sorbian settlement called “Słubia” occupied this very spot. Today, it’s known as Markendorf, a district of Frankfurt (Oder). Markendorf holds a captivating history. It’s a story of change and resilience shaped by its location near the Oder River.

Markendorf was first mentioned in Polish documents as Margrabiow. This name hints at the village’s connection to the Margrave of Brandenburg. Over the centuries, Markendorf’s ownership changed hands numerous times. These shifts are evident in the evolving spellings of its name, from Markgreuendorf to Marggrauendorp, and finally settling as Markendorf.

During the Thirty Years’ War, Markendorf faced devastation. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a grand manor house emerged in the late 17th century. The estate boasted beautiful gardens and even a greenhouse for growing pineapples. This marked an era of prosperity for the village.

The winds of change blew again in the 20th century. World War II left Markendorf in ruins. After the war, it became part of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1947. The village witnessed the rise of the German Democratic Republic and played a significant role in East German industry. The VEB Halbleiterwerk, a semiconductor factory, put Markendorf on the map.

After the reunification of Germany, Markendorf faced new challenges. The semiconductor factory closed. However, the spirit of resilience persevered. New housing developments sprouted, and the former hospital transformed into a modern clinic.

Markendorf, bearing witness to centuries of history, has emerged as a tranquil district. It harbors a unique blend of old and new. This is a place where the echoes of Sorbian settlements mingle with the stories of industrial growth and modern development. Markendorf stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a community.
