Steinbruch Dünkelberg

Hidden within the Muttental valley, south of the Ruhr River, lies the Steinbruch Dünkelberg. Can you imagine the echoes of miners and the rumble of carts filled with clay? This unassuming quarry, designated as both a natural and archaeological monument, holds a fascinating story woven into the very fabric of Witten’s industrial heritage. Steinbruch Dünkelberg wasn’t always a quiet, natural haven. It once pulsed with activity, supplying the Dünkelberg brickworks with the raw materials needed for their trade. The brickworks, situated on the grounds of the former Zeche Nachtigall colliery, relied heavily on the clay extracted from Steinbruch Dünkelberg. Imagine the constant back-and-forth as tons of clay journeyed through the 130-meter Nachtigallstollen, a tunnel connecting the quarry directly to the brickworks. This tunnel, a vital artery in the local industry, later played a crucial role during the post-World War II coal shortage. The Nachtigallstollen, initially built for clay transportation, became a lifeline for coal extraction. Today, it serves as a visitor mine, a testament to its adaptable history within the LWL Industrial Museum Zeche Nachtigall. Steinbruch Dünkelberg reveals more than just industrial history. It offers a glimpse into the deep past, showcasing a 100-meter profile of the “Lower Witten Strata”. These layers of rock, formed between the Finefrau-Nebenbank seam and the Mausegatt seam, contain six workable coal seams. Among these are the “Geitling” and “Geitling 3” seams, names derived from the regional term for blackbird. Today, the Steinbruch Dünkelberg is a haven for wildlife. The quarry’s cliffs provide a nesting place for owls. This peaceful scene contrasts sharply with the quarry’s bustling industrial past, highlighting nature’s ability to reclaim and transform.
