How does a tortoise become a conservation icon? Here at the Arnaldo Tupiza-Chamaidan Giant Tortoise Breeding Center on Isabela Island, that question takes center stage. This center plays a crucial role in protecting Galapagos giant tortoises. It’s a short walk from Puerto Villamil, about 1.5km. The Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Center was established in 1995. Its initial purpose was to protect tortoise habitat threatened by a major fire on southern Isabela. The center also works to rebuild various tortoise subpopulations. Five native subspecies are bred here: Cerro Paloma, Cazuela, Cinco Cerros, San Pedro, Tables, and Roca Union. These tortoises are bred here because their environment is threatened by other animals and volcanic eruptions. At the center, you’ll see special corrals for adult tortoises. There’s also a hatchery for incubating tortoise eggs. The center breeds Cerro Azul and Sierra Negra tortoises, listed as Endangered and Critically Endangered, respectively. Around 69 adult tortoises produce roughly 250 young per year for eventual release into the wild. This breeding center isn’t just about increasing the population. It’s about ensuring these unique Galapagos giants are preserved for generations to come. You’ll see thousands of turtles here, from tiny babies to impressive adults. You’ll learn about their reproduction and growth in captivity. Observe the incredible efforts made to restore their endangered wild populations. The center also houses a special enclosure. This enclosure protects four male and two female Cerro Paloma tortoises, the last known survivors of their subspecies. The work here at Arnaldo Tupiza-Chamaidan has allowed hundreds of young tortoises, or ‘galapaguitos’, to thrive. Even the walk to the center is an experience. You’ll see fascinating local flora. Admire the mangroves, faique, palo santo, capraria, and rodilla de caballo. The Arnaldo Tupiza-Chamaidan Giant Tortoise Breeding Center offers a glimpse of hope for these magnificent creatures.
