Is it possible that Sodegaura 2-chome holds secrets of urban evolution? Sodegaura 2-chome is a residential neighborhood in Narashino City. It is part of Chiba Prefecture. Sodegaura’s story begins with land reclamation. This area was once tidal flats facing Tokyo Bay.

In the mid-1960s, the Chiba Prefectural Enterprise Agency reclaimed the land. In December 1966, it became Sodegaura 1-chome to 6-chome. Sodegaura 2-chome and 3-chome feature a large housing complex. The Urban Renaissance Agency built it. It was known as the Japan Housing Corporation back then. Occupancy began in 1967. The complex is divided into seven blocks. Each block has mid-rise apartment buildings. Most buildings are five stories high.

The fifth block of 3-chome is the central management district. Here you would find the complex management office. There was also an assembly hall and shopping area. A bank and post office served the community. The Peacock Store closed in September 2016. Now a hard-discount store called Big-A operates there. The plaza in front of the management office was a hub. Sodegaura Neighborhood Park is nearby. Together they formed the central plaza. Various events took place here. Bon Odori dances were common when tenants first moved in. A community center was established in 1981. It was built in a corner of the neighborhood park.

Apartments in the complex came in two types. Some had two bedrooms. Others had three bedrooms. Most buildings were leased. Eight buildings in the 2-chome 7 block were sold. Sodegaura housing complex was a landmark. It represented public housing in Chiba Prefecture. Over 40 years have passed since occupancy began. The complex has aged significantly. The aging of residents is also a challenge. This mirrors many public housing complexes built around the same time.

Originally “Sodegaura” referred to a beach. It was on the Chiba Prefecture side of Tokyo Bay. Sodegaura City retains this name. Fishermen actively cultivated seaweed here. They also fished during ebb tide. The reclaimed land served as a boatyard. Tourists and residents flocked here for clam digging. Land reclamation work began in the early 1970s. The tidal flats disappeared. Fishing rights were abandoned. The boat pools were no longer used. Kugata Funadamari and Saginuma Funadamari were reclaimed in the 1980s.

As you explore Sodegaura 2-chome consider its journey. It transformed from tidal flats to a residential area. This area reflects urban development and community change.
