Imagine a world without backspace. That world comes alive inside the Museo della Macchina da Scrivere. Here at the Typewriter Museum, we celebrate the age of analog writing. This museum is a tribute to a time before computers dominated our lives.

The Museo della Macchina da Scrivere began in 2006. Umberto Di Donato, a passionate collector, founded it. He started with 200 typewriters and calculating machines in Milan’s Isola district. Today, the collection boasts over 1800 machines.

The Museo della Macchina da Scrivere features some very old models. One is the Caligraph 1882 made in the USA. Another highlight is the Williams from 1887. It inspired Camillo Olivetti’s typewriter adventure in Italy. Some typewriters belonged to famous Italians. Francesco Cossiga, Camilla Cederna and Matilde Serao used them.

This museum is a treasure trove. It holds many unique models. See a Chinese typewriter from the 1920s with countless ideograms. There is even one that writes in Arabic. Look for the Olympia from World War II. It has a special key for the SS symbol. You can even spot toy models like Barbie’s pink typewriter.

What makes the Museo della Macchina da Scrivere special? It’s hands-on. With care, visitors can actually type on many machines. Some are available for kids and students. Experts like Sauro, Giuseppina and Chiara share their knowledge. Umberto Di Donato himself often gives tours.

The museum actively promotes typewriter culture. It has organized traveling exhibits across Europe. The Museo della Macchina da Scrivere also hosts events. They offer courses in typing, cuneiform and hieroglyphics. A typing contest named after Indro Montanelli is held for young people.

Umberto Di Donato once worked as a typist when he first arrived in Milan. He created this museum as a tribute to his first job. He also wanted to honor analog writing.
