Fancy that Milan has a strong connection to the sea. It is embodied right here at the Marinai in Milan. This is the National Sailors Association of Italy. It was founded in Milan on February 11 1911. Back then it was called the Italian Seafarers Union.
The Marinai started here in Milan. From here it spread throughout Italy and the world. It reached wherever Italian sailors had emigrated. The association welcomes all Italian citizens. This includes those living abroad. They must have served the country faithfully in the Navy or Merchant Marine.
In 1934 the association changed its name. It became the National Sailors Association of Italy. It then became the official association of the Royal Navy. Later it represented the Italian Navy. The original Milan group was named after war hero Aristide Carabelli in 1954.
The Marinai building you see before you was built in 1974. Architect Marco Zanuso designed it. It replaced the previous wooden headquarters. The building stands near the Darsena. It offers a beautiful panoramic terrace overlooking the city port.
Inside the Marinai building, there is a small naval library. It has received praise from the President of the Republic. You will also find a reception hall and many naval relics. The space hosts book presentations. It holds meetings and debates about the Navigli. They discuss Milan, navigation and environmental issues.
Interestingly, Milan and Lombardy were major sources for naval recruits. This might surprise many of you. The Marinai in Milan also has a unique artifact. It is a “Maiale”. This is a slow-speed torpedo. It was used in World War II by the Italian Royal Navy. They used it for sabotage against enemy ships.
The “Maiale” got its name from a grunting sound. The sound was heard after an accident during testing. It came from the backwash hitting it. The Marinai also has two “Seabin” trash cans. These help clean the Darsena waters by collecting nanoplastics.
The Marinai in Milan is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Milan’s surprising maritime history. It’s a place where naval traditions are kept alive. The association actively participates in cultural events. They organize historical and sports initiatives. They promote social activities too. They even offer summer activities for young people. These include sailing trips and adventure camps. The Marinai also collaborates with other associations. Together they address public needs for civil protection.
