Isn’t it remarkable how a small group’s dream can shape a community? Lemon Grove Congregational Church started with just eleven people. They were six families who had been meeting since 1872.
Lemon Grove Community Church’s story began in 1894. Reverend Isaac Atherton inspired them. He was a circuit rider serving East County’s small churches. Imagine him traveling on horseback from parish to parish.
For a few years this small group gathered in a schoolhouse. Then in 1898 they built their first church. It was named Atherton Chapel. The Lemon Grove church was later known as the First Congregational Church of Lemon Grove. In 1975 its name changed. It became Lemon Grove Congregational, United Church of Christ. The name changed again in 2002. It finally became Lemon Grove Community Church.
Dr. Sharon Ackerman is now the Pastoral leader. The Lemon Grove Community Church built a new sanctuary. It sits on the original Main Street site. This “Lagoon Chapel on the Trolley” is special. It has one of East County’s finest pipe organs. World-class stained-glass windows adorn it.
Lemon Grove Community Church actively supports the community. It founded the Lemon Grove Food Bank. The church also founded Lemon Grove’s “Toys For Tots.” It built the Prairie Parsonage. Now it is the Parsonage Museum. The church provided leadership that created the city of Lemon Grove. This was achieved by breaking away from San Diego in 1976.
The Lemon Grove Congregational Church sponsors a monthly Clergy Breakfast. It supports social service organizations. These include Lemon Grove Community Charities and the Kurdish Bible Institute. It partners with Lemon Grove public schools. The church assists at-risk students. They provide tutoring, after-school programs, and music.
The Lemon Grove church’s journey reflects Lemon Grove’s growth. From a small chapel to a community hub, it shows faith’s power. Its commitment continues to enrich Lemon Grove. The Lemon Grove Community Church is a beacon. It shows community spirit and enduring faith.
