Had anyone ever told them about the “village of small looms”? Chintadripet. A name whispered on the winds of Chennai, carrying the scent of cotton and the rhythmic clatter of looms. Chintadripet, nestled on the banks of the Cooum River, holds a secret history woven into its very fabric. In 1734, George Morton Pitt, the then British governor, envisioned a thriving textile hub. He brought over 230 weaver families to this area. Their mission? To spin and weave cotton for the burgeoning export market. The original name, Chinna Thari Pettai, a Tamil term, reflects this origin. It truly was a village of small looms. The Justice E. Padmanabhan Committee Report cemented this purpose. It declared that only those involved in the textile trade, along with temple personnel, would be permitted to reside in Chintadripet. But the story of Chintadripet begins even earlier. In 1719, Sunku Rama, a chief merchant for the East India Company, was granted land here by Governor Joseph Collet. This land, a tranquil spot by the Cooum River’s bend, would become the heart of Chintadripet. However, Sunku Rama’s fortunes shifted. He was dismissed from his post in 1731, and the Company reclaimed his land, paving the way for Pitt’s weaver settlement. Another key figure emerges: Bemala Audiappa Narayana Chetty. Also a chief merchant, Chetty played a crucial role in populating the new village. Within two years, Chintadripet flourished. Nearly 250 families called it home. For generations, the clatter of looms filled the air. Each of the fifteen streets boasted a dozen or more weavers. Chintadripet was synonymous with its craft. But as power looms gained prominence and cotton production declined, many weavers sought opportunities elsewhere. The vibrant tapestry of Chintadripet began to fade. Yet, even today, echoes of this rich past remain. If you look closely, amidst the bustling markets and modern demands, you’ll find remnants of the old ways. Spinners and weavers still ply their trade, a testament to the enduring spirit of Chintadripet. The beautiful old houses, the historic temples, the forgotten schools—they whisper stories of a bygone era, a time when the rhythm of life was set by the steady beat of the loom. Chintadripet stands as a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling metropolis, threads of history can still be found, woven into the fabric of the city.
