Like a sturdy tree with deep roots, Zion Lutheran Church has stood as a pillar in Salt Lake City. It has a rich history that began with a small group of Swedish immigrants.

The story of Zion Lutheran Church starts in 1882. Pastor John Telleen recognized the need for a church. He met with others at St. Mark’s Episcopal Chapel and organized the Zion Swedish Lutheran Church. These pioneers wanted a place to worship in their own language and tradition.

Initially, Pastor Samuel M. Hill served the church for two years. Then, Rev. J. A. Krantz became the pastor in 1885. At that time, the church changed its name to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The congregation grew steadily and built a church at 200 South and 400 East in 1885.

As more people joined Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, the need for a larger space became clear. In 1957, Zion Lutheran Church made a significant move. They built a new church at 1070 Foothill Drive. After 65 years at the original location, the congregation moved to its present home on the East Bench.

The old church building at 200 South and 400 East was demolished. However, a piece of history was preserved. The historic bell from the original church was installed in the belfry of the new Zion Lutheran Church.

Zion Lutheran Church has a fascinating connection to other religious communities. Today, its building also hosts the Salt Lake City Insight Meditation Community. This group is associated with the Theravada Buddhist tradition.

Over the years, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has kept detailed records. These records include correspondence, membership lists and minute books. There are also baptismal records and building records. Meeting materials, programs and articles are preserved as well. You can even find directories, yearbooks and treasurer’s reports. These documents provide a glimpse into the life and evolution of the church. The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church records from 1882 to 1998 are kept at the University of Utah Libraries Special Collections.

Zion Lutheran Church’s story reflects the broader history of Lutheranism in Utah. During Utah’s territorial period, several evangelical Christian churches were present. The Lutheran church played a significant role in this movement. Many Lutherans came to Utah to minister to fellow Lutherans. Some also hoped to convert Mormon Scandinavians back to their original faith.

Various synods make up the Lutheran church. These synods were often divided by nationality. The Augustana Synod played a key role in Utah. It concentrated its efforts in areas with Scandinavian settlers. Missionaries established churches in Provo and Mount Pleasant.

Zion Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith. It also embodies community and change. From its humble beginnings to its current home, it has adapted. It continues to serve as a spiritual center in Salt Lake City. Its historic bell still rings. The bell serves as a reminder of the church’s past and its enduring presence.
