“Is that a weeping willow?” That is what many ask when first seeing the Saiakachi tree. It stands tall near Kousenji Temple. We are now standing before Kousenji Temple. It is also called Izaguchi Gobo. This temple has a rich history.
Kousenji Temple’s story starts in 1475. At that time, Rennyo Shonin was a priest. He had left Yoshizaki Gobo. Rennyo moved to Izaguchi Village. Izaguchi is now part of Hirakata City. Back then, Izaguchi had only nine homes. Rennyo started building Izaguchi Gobo here. He lived here for three years. He spread Buddhist teachings.
The name Kousenji comes from a follower. His name was Miyake Nyudo Kousen. He supported Rennyo. He built a grass hermitage for him in Izaguchi. The temple’s name honors this follower. As the temple grew, many followers moved nearby. A temple town formed around Kousenji Temple.
Rennyo moved to Yamashina in 1478. He established Yamashina Honganji Temple. Rennyo appointed Gonnyo as the caretaker of Kousenji. Kousenji became a prominent temple.
Fire destroyed Kousenji in 1534. The temple moved temporarily. It relocated to various places. These included Tojimagashima and Oaza. Later, it returned to Izaguchi. It was rebuilt between 1596 and 1615. The name Kousenji was officially adopted.
During the Battle of Ishiyama, Gyosho made contributions. He sided with Honganji. Kousenji then joined the Nishi Honganji sect. In 1696, Jikko joined Higashi Honganji.
The main hall was rebuilt in 1782. It exemplifies late Edo period architecture. Several buildings remain from the Edo period.
The temple grounds were designated a historical site in 2010. Rennyo preached to villagers. He sat on a stone. This stone is now called “Rennyo Shonin Koshikake Stone.” It is said that Izaguchi dango sweets are shaped like it.
The Saiakachi tree is a natural monument. It has a legend. It is said that Rennyo and a dragon princess planted it.
