Did you know this lion symbolizes more than just animal strength? The Löwendenkmal, though located in Augsburg, Germany, echoes a story from Lucerne, Switzerland. It’s a tale of loyalty, loss, and artistic tribute.

The original Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland commemorates the Swiss Guards. These guards tragically died in 1792 during the French Revolution. Revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The Swiss Guards were defending the French Royal Family.

This Löwendenkmal is a copy of the original one. Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen was an officer of the Guards. He was on leave in Lucerne during the August fight. He later wrote a book detailing the Swiss Guards regiment during the French Revolution. This book created a strong reaction throughout conservative circles in Switzerland. It motivated him to organize a public subscription to finance a commemorative monument.

He commissioned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen to design the image. Stonemason Lukas Ahorn was contracted to fashion the monument. The monument is dedicated Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti. This means “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”.

Carved into a cliff face, the monument measures ten meters in length and six meters in height. The dying lion is portrayed impaled by a spear. It covers a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis. This is the symbol of the French monarchy. Beside the lion, another shield bears Switzerland’s coat of arms.

The inscription below lists the officers’ names. It also gives the approximate number of soldiers who died. DCCLX equals 760. The number of survivors is also noted: CCCL, which equals 350. The work was completed in 1821.

Mark Twain described the original monument as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.” This Löwendenkmal here reminds us of that poignant symbol. It stands as a testament to bravery. It honors those who gave their lives.

Even before it was built the original monument was controversial. Its political message glorified the ancien régime. It elicited praise and public criticism. Some were displeased that a monument honored Swiss citizens dying for a foreign monarchy. Swiss liberals felt the lion glorified a conservative mindset. Some even threatened to saw off a paw in protest.

Here in Augsburg, this replica allows us to reflect on these events. It lets us contemplate the complexities of loyalty. It encourages us to remember sacrifices made long ago. Consider the weight of history etched in stone. Think about the stories monuments tell.
