You might be surprised to learn that Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, the fourth busiest airport in China, once housed the headquarters of China Southwest Airlines, a now-defunct airline. Shuangliu, a suburban district of Chengdu, is rapidly urbanizing with the growth of Chengdu and the airport’s recent expansion. This district is home to the ancient city of Guangdu, which served as the capital of a number of ancient clans. The area was incorporated into the Qin state in 316 BCE as Shu Commandery. Shuangliu County was upgraded to Shuangliu District on March 1, 2016. The district is bordered by the prefecture-level cities of Ziyang to the southeast and Meishan to the south. The district reported a GDP of 96.205 billion Yuan for 2019, an 8.8% increase from 2018. This suburban district of Chengdu is an important hub for tourism, commerce, and transportation and is fast becoming an important economic force in the region.
