How often do you see intertwined arms cast in bronze? Here at Ab Initio Sculpture, we find a powerful embrace frozen in time. This isn’t just any sculpture. It is a monument to love and the civil rights movement. It’s called The Embrace.

The Embrace commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. The sculpture captures the iconic hug they shared after King’s Nobel Peace Prize win in 1964. Hank Willis Thomas created this artwork. He welded about 609 smaller pieces together to form this impressive sculpture.

The Embrace stands tall at 20 feet. It stretches 25 feet wide. This bronze sculpture weighs a hefty 19 tons. Look closely and you will see details like buttons on King’s sleeves. Coretta Scott King’s bracelet is also visible.

The sculpture sits in the 1965 Freedom Plaza. This plaza honors 69 civil rights leaders from Boston. The plaza is within Boston Common. You will find it between the Visitor’s Center and the Boston Massacre Monument.

The Embrace’s design highlights the Kings’ dedication to nonviolence. It emphasizes love as a driving force in their civil rights work.

The Boston Foundation and Embrace Boston sought proposals for a King memorial in 2017. Thomas’s design was chosen from 126 submissions in 2019. Mass Design Group built the sculpture in Walla Walla, Washington. It was installed here in December 2022. The formal dedication took place on January 13, 2023. Dignitaries and the Kings’ son and granddaughter attended.

The Embrace has sparked much discussion. Critics and the public have shared mixed reactions. Some find it artistically lacking. Others appreciate its symbolism.

Despite criticism, some see the sculpture’s positive message. King’s granddaughter sees love, strength, and unity in the sculpture. She said it symbolizes a beautiful marriage that changed the world.

Thomas defended his work. He noted that the people of Boston chose this design. He also found some criticisms perverse. He says thousands helped design and build the piece.

The Embrace invites us to reflect. What does it mean to memorialize love and activism in art? This sculpture is more than bronze. It’s a conversation starter about legacy, memory, and public art. It’s a tribute to a couple whose embrace changed the world. It stands as a reminder of their enduring impact on Boston and beyond.
