IIT Delhi quickly gained recognition. In 1963, it was declared an Institution of National Importance. This granted the institute autonomy. It could decide its academic policy and award its degrees.

IIT Delhi has expanded over the years. Today, it has satellite campuses in Sonipat and Jhajjar. The Sonipat campus focuses on executive programs and technology development. The Jhajjar campus is setting up a biomedical research park.

IIT Delhi offers a wide range of programs. These include Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. Admission to the undergraduate programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination. The institute also offers postgraduate programs in technology, science, and design.

IIT Delhi consistently achieves high rankings. In 2024, the QS World University Rankings placed it 150th globally. The National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked it among the top engineering and management schools in India.

Student life at IIT Delhi is vibrant. The annual cultural fest, Rendezvous, attracts participants from around the world. Tryst, the technical fest, showcases innovation and technological prowess.

IIT Delhi boasts a strong alumni network. Its graduates include Sachin and Binny Bansal of Flipkart. Also, Raghuram Rajan served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Chetan Bhagat is a renowned author. These alumni have made significant contributions to various fields.
