Over five million books. That’s a lot of stories isn’t it? Welcome to the Sichuan Provincial Library.

This grand institution isn’t just a repository of books. It’s a living testament to Sichuan’s rich history and intellectual life. Established in 1912 it’s one of China’s oldest public libraries. It’s also the largest in Western China. That’s quite an achievement.

The library’s journey hasn’t been easy. Early years were spent in a modest blue brick building. Financial difficulties even led to a period where it was managed by the Chengdu Municipal Government. It was renamed Chengdu Municipal Library then. A later struggle for control saw the Sichuan Provincial Department of Education eventually reclaim it.

In 1940 it found a new home in a former government building. Through name changes and relocations the library persevered. It grew from a small collection to its current impressive size. Its holdings now include over five million books and a vast digital archive.

The Sichuan Provincial Library is more than just books. It hosts events lectures and exhibitions. It’s a hub for cultural exchange and academic research. The recent addition of the Zhang Daqian Documentation Centre showcases its commitment to preserving art and culture. The library also recently displayed a stunning 100-picture panda Thangka.

Imagine the countless hours spent within these walls. Students scholars and curious minds have all sought knowledge here. The library’s enduring legacy is a testament to the power of knowledge and its ability to shape lives and communities. Step inside. Explore its vast collection. Discover your own story within the walls of this incredible place. The Sichuan Provincial Library awaits.
