Here at the Western Theater Command headquarters in Chengdu, strategy and readiness intertwine. This command is one of China’s five theater commands. It was founded on February 1 2016.
The Western Theater Command is responsible for a vast area. This includes Sichuan, Tibet, Gansu and Ningxia. Qinghai, Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Yunnan and Chongqing are also included. Guizhou is sometimes listed as part of the command too. The current commander is General Wang Haijiang. He assumed the role in August 2021. General Li Fengbiao is the current political commissar.
The Western Theater Command’s area of responsibility is extensive. It includes India, South Asia and Central Asia. Western Mongolia, Pakistan and Afghanistan are also part of it.
Within the Western Theater Command is a joint operations command center. It is also located here in Chengdu. This center facilitates coordinated military action. The Army HQ of the WTC is in Lanzhou.
The command can deploy various units. These include PLA Army and Air Force units. It can request additional forces from the Central Military Commission if needed.
In 2016, experts gathered to promote joint operations. This shows the command’s commitment to integrated strategies. The PLA Rocket Force assigned officers to support planning and training.
Integral ground force assets include the 76th and 77th Group Armies. These armies possess advanced military equipment. This includes main battle tanks and infantry combat vehicles. They operate as Joint Tactical Battle Groups. They complete annual training regimens.
The Western Theater Command released an official hymn in 2020. It is called “The Battle Hymn of the Western Theater Command”. General Zhao Zongqi wrote the lyrics. Luan Kai composed the music.
The Western Theater Command plays a crucial role. It ensures stability and oversees border relations. Its headquarters in Chengdu is a center of strategic importance. It is a place where military readiness and regional security converge.
