“Zen masters say the dragon painted on the ceiling of Hatto Hall in Myoshinji always stares back at you.” That’s just one of the captivating secrets Myoshinji Temple holds.

Myoshinji Temple is a large Zen temple complex in northwestern Kyoto. It houses around 50 subtemples alongside its main buildings. Many subtemples remain closed to the public. But visitors can explore the walking paths. The temple shares similarities with Daitokuji Temple.

Founded in 1337, Myoshinji began as an imperial villa. An abdicated emperor transformed it into a Zen temple. Today Myoshinji stands as the head temple of the Myoshinji school. This Rinzai Zen sect boasts over 3000 affiliated temples. It is the largest of all Zen temples.

Near Myoshinji’s southern gate you’ll find its main structures. They are arranged in a row. The Sanmon Gate leads to the Butsuden Hall. Next is the Hatto Hall and the Ohojo building. The Sanmon Gate and Butsuden Hall are important cultural properties. But they can only be viewed from the outside.

The Hatto Hall welcomes visitors for a fee. Inside you will see a giant dragon painting on the ceiling. Depending on where you stand the dragon looks different. One of Japan’s oldest temple bells is also displayed. It dates back to the 7th century.

Myoshinji has many subtemples. Taizoin Temple is the most famous. Its pond garden was created in the mid 1960s. It is considered a masterpiece of the Showa Period. Kano Motonobu designed its rock garden in the 1400s. The temple features a painting from the 1400s. It shows a Buddhist parable. It is about a man trying to catch a fish with a gourd.

Keishunin Temple and Daishinin Temple are also open. Keishunin Temple offers gardens and a tea room. Daishinin Temple is the smallest. But it features a rock garden, a peony garden and temple rooms.

Ryoanji Temple is nearby. Although now separate it used to be a subtemple of Myoshinji.
The temple’s history whispers from every corner. Monks still practice Zen teachings here. As you wander these serene grounds reflect on the artistry and devotion.
