In 1611, Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Quebec City, named Saint Helen’s Island after his wife, Hélène de Champlain. Now, picture yourselves transported back to that time. Saint Helen’s Island, right before us, is a pristine wilderness. Imagine Champlain, stepping ashore, claiming this land. He envisions a future, a bustling city rising across the water. Saint Helen’s Island itself, he decrees, will be a strategic jewel, a place of defense, a place of beauty. Fast forward through time. The British, recognizing the island’s strategic importance, purchased Saint Helen’s Island in 1818. They constructed fortifications, including the Saint Helen Island Fort, a powderhouse, and a blockhouse, to protect Montreal from potential American attacks following the War of 1812. Years later, the island was transformed. No longer solely a military outpost, Saint Helen’s Island opened as a public park in 1874. Montrealers flocked to its shores, enjoying the sandy beaches and the refreshing waters of the Saint Lawrence River. During World War II, the island took on a darker role. A prisoner-of-war camp was established here, housing primarily German and Italian POWs. This chapter in Saint Helen’s Island’s history is less known, a somber reminder of global conflict. The island’s destiny shifted again with Expo 67. Saint Helen’s Island, along with the newly constructed Notre Dame Island, formed the heart of this world’s fair. The island was significantly expanded, using earth excavated from the Montreal metro construction. Today, Saint Helen’s Island remains a vibrant destination. The Biosphere, a striking remnant of Expo 67, now serves as a museum dedicated to the Saint Lawrence River. The La Ronde amusement park thrills visitors with its exciting rides. The island also hosts numerous events, including the L’International des Feux Loto-Québec fireworks competition and the Osheaga music festival. From a wilderness untouched to a strategic fortress, from a public playground to a wartime prison, and from a world’s fair site to a modern entertainment hub, Saint Helen’s Island holds centuries of stories. As you explore this island, remember the layers of history beneath your feet, the echoes of the past resonating in the present.
