In 2019, Rhodia Acetow became Cerdia. Today, we stand before the Cerdia Produktions GmbH in Freiburg. It is a key part of a company with over 100 years of history. Cerdia is not just any company. It is a global leader in cellulose acetate.
Cerdia’s story began long before its current name. In 1912, the first production of flakes started in France. Then, in 1927, production began here in Freiburg. The company was then named Deutsche Acetat-Kunstseiden Aktiengesellschaft Rhodiaseta. This marked the start of the Industriegebiet Nord development.
Over the years, Cerdia expanded its reach. Production sites opened in Brazil in 1937. Filter tow production started in Freiburg in 1956. By 2019, Rhodia Acetow officially became Cerdia. Its headquarters moved to Basel, Switzerland.
Cerdia’s Freiburg site is a major operation. Around 750 of Cerdia’s 1,100 employees worldwide work here. The production occurs through Cerdia Produktions GmbH. The sister company, Cerdia Services GmbH, handles related services.
The company has seen many changes. In 2011, Solvay Group acquired Rhodia. In 2016, Blackstone bought Acetow from Solvay. Each change has shaped Cerdia into what it is today.
Cerdia’s products have diverse uses. They create cellulose acetate flakes for paints and lacquers. They also produce filter tow for cigarette filters. Cerdia is known for quality and innovation in these areas.
Sustainability is a core value for Cerdia. The company focuses on sustainable, high-quality solutions. This commitment drives their innovation and growth. Cerdia aims to be a leading provider in its field.
Even the Europa-Park-Stadion benefits from Cerdia’s presence in Freiburg. The stadium uses process waste heat from the Cerdia site. This innovative approach highlights Cerdia’s commitment to the environment.
Cerdia has a long history of training. They have over 80 years of experience in Freiburg. Modern facilities and dedicated trainers support their apprentices. Each year, Cerdia seeks new trainees for its programs.
As we stand here, we see more than just a factory. We see a company with a rich history and a bright future. Cerdia Produktions GmbH continues to play a vital role in Freiburg and the world.
