How about we uncover a tale of faith and reform? It’s the story of Glasgow Reform Synagogue, the only Reform synagogue in Scotland.

The Glasgow Reform Synagogue stands as a testament to a vibrant Jewish community. It embodies a balance between tradition and modernity. This synagogue has a rich and evolving history. It reflects the changing face of Judaism in Scotland.

Founded in 1933, the Glasgow Reform Synagogue started as Glasgow Progressive Synagogue. Later, it became Glasgow New Synagogue. The present name was adopted in 2014. Samuel Ginsburg, a Glasgow printer, established it. He wanted a new place of worship after disagreeing about his son’s Bar Mitzvah costs.

Initially, the Reform congregants met in different halls and homes. In 1936, they established their first synagogue at 39 Queen Square, Strathbungo. The congregation moved several times over the years. These locations include Albert Road and Langside Halls. In 1950, the Glasgow New Synagogue opened at 306 Albert Drive, Pollokshields. The congregation then began to grow.

By 1964, structural repairs were needed. It was decided to move again. In 1968, they purchased the premises at Ayr Road. This was a listed, former municipal building. The building was fully refurbished in 2002.

Many notable rabbis have led the Glasgow Reform Synagogue. Rabbi Joseph Levine was the first minister. Rabbi Halevi Barron succeeded him in 1937. The Rev S. Mendoza served during the early war years. Rabbi C. E. Cassell then became the full-time resident minister in 1945.

Rabbi Nigel Atkins served from 1961 to 1967. Rabbi Hillel Avidan returned from Israel to serve from 1970 to 1974. Rabbi Sion David led the congregation from 1967 to 1970. Rabbi Simon Franses served as rabbi from 1974 to 1987. Rabbi David Kunin joined in 1990 and remained until 1995. Rabbi Pete Tobias first arrived and was in post until 2003. Then Rabbi Pete Tobias returned to the Glasgow Reform Synagogue in 2021.

Nancy Morris made history as the first female rabbi in Scotland. She served from 2003 to 2011. Rabbi Kate Briggs then served the community from 2014 to 2016.
