From a humble lodging house to a vibrant hub of learning, St Edmund’s College has witnessed a remarkable transformation. St Edmund’s College stands before you, a testament to the resilience and vision of its founders. In 1896, it began as St Edmund’s House, a simple lodging house for Catholic students. This marked a significant moment, as Catholics were once again permitted to study at Cambridge after a long absence. The college’s Catholic heritage is deeply interwoven with its identity. It’s named after St Edmund of Abingdon, a prominent figure in Oxford’s and Canterbury’s history. The founders, Henry Fitzalan Howard, the 15th Duke of Norfolk, and Baron Anatole von Hügel, aimed to create a supportive space for Catholic scholars. Von Hügel played a pivotal role in lifting the papal ban on Catholics attending Cambridge and Oxford. Interestingly, three of the first four students at St Edmund’s House came from St Edmund’s College, Ware, all pursuing priesthood. Over the years, St Edmund’s College steadily grew. In 1965, it became a graduate college, reflecting the rising number of postgraduates at the University. The college embraced change, welcoming lay individuals and expanding its student body. By the 21st century, St Edmund’s had blossomed into a diverse international community. In 1998, it received its Royal Charter, solidifying its status as a full college of the University of Cambridge. Today, St Edmund’s College stands as a unique institution, the only Cambridge college with a Roman Catholic chapel. It embraces mature undergraduates and postgraduates from various backgrounds. The Von Hügel Institute, a research center dedicated to critical Catholic inquiry, is also situated on the college grounds, further enriching the academic environment. St Edmund’s College’s journey reflects its commitment to intellectual pursuit, diversity, and inclusion. It has truly become a place where tradition and progress intersect.
