Baoxing County’s history extends back over four thousand years. It was once part of the Qiang State of Qingyi during the Spring and Autumn period. The name Baoxing meaning treasure and prosperity reflects its rich natural resources. This name was officially adopted in 1930.

Between 1957 and 1982 over fifteen giant pandas from Baoxing’s Fengtongzhai National Natural Protected Area were gifted to countries worldwide including the United States Spain France Mexico and Japan. This highlights the county’s contribution to global panda conservation.

Baoxing County is a geopolitical crossroads and transportation hub. It sits at the convergence of various cultures and ethnic groups. These include Han Qiang Tibetan Nakhi and Gyalrong Tibetan people. These cultural influences have shaped the county’s history for over 800 years. The historical Tea Horse Road passed through Baoxing connecting Sichuan and Tibet.

The diverse terrain creates a varied climate. The highest point is Mount Shilama at 5328 meters. The lowest is Lingguan Gap at 750 meters. The annual precipitation averages 912.2 mm. The numerous rivers hold an estimated electricity generating capacity exceeding 140 million kilowatts.

Baoxing County’s significance extends beyond its pandas. It’s a biodiversity hotspot. It’s the type locality for numerous endangered species. These include the giant panda the dove tree and the golden snub-nosed monkey. In 2006 UNESCO recognized Baoxing County as part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries a World Heritage Site.
