Whispers of ancient rituals drift on the wind here at the Pi County Ancient City Site. Can you hear them? This site, known as the Pi County Ancient City Site (郫县古城遗址) in Chengdu, holds the echoes of a civilization 4000 years old. It’s a Neolithic treasure, part of the Baodun culture that thrived on the Chengdu Plain. In 2001, the Pi County Ancient City Site earned its place as a nationally protected historical site. Its rectangular walls whisper tales of a city that once bustled within. The walls stretch 620 meters long and 490 meters wide. The ancient city walls, ranging from 8 to 40 meters in width and 0.8 to 5 meters high, enclose approximately 300,000 square meters. The Pi County Ancient City Site stands out among the prehistoric city sites of the Chengdu Plain. Its walls are the best preserved, a testament to the city’s enduring strength. Within these walls, archaeologists uncovered evidence of large-scale residential areas. These structures hint at ceremonial gatherings, perhaps rituals performed under an ancient sky. Even today, the Pi County Ancient City Site’s influence is felt. In 2009, the Chengdu-Pengzhou railway line was deliberately rerouted. It now curves around the site, keeping a respectful distance of over 200 meters. Chengdu’s Second Ring Expressway also gives the site a wide berth, passing approximately 300 meters away. A quiet reverence for history guides the path of progress, ensuring that the whispers of the past continue to be heard at the Pi County Ancient City Site.
