Perhaps the walls of this house could talk? They might tell tales of an artist who defied labels. This is the Wohnhaus Paul Klee. It stands as a testament to a life interwoven with art. It is a life marked by creativity, resilience and a touch of irony.

Paul Klee lived in this house. He was a painter and graphic artist. His versatile work defies easy categorization. Expressionism, Constructivism and Surrealism all touched his art.

Klee’s journey began in Münchenbuchsee near Bern. He was born in 1879. His father was a German music teacher. His mother was a Swiss singer. Music filled his childhood. This early exposure profoundly shaped his artistic sensibilities.

Paul showed early talent. Drawing and poetry were strong interests. His schoolbooks were filled with caricatures. He captured city silhouettes like Bern. Despite his talent his parents wanted him to be a musician.

In 1898 Klee finished school. He chose art over music. He enrolled in Munich’s art scene. This decision defied his parents wishes. Klee felt music’s peak was in the past. He found modern compositions uninspiring.

He first studied graphic arts. Later he joined Franz von Stuck’s painting class. There he encountered Wassily Kandinsky. Klee did not care for the teaching. He only went occasionally and did not get to know Kandinsky well.

A trip to Tunisia in 1914 changed everything. He traveled with August Macke and Louis Moilliet. The journey ignited his passion for color. He declared “I am a painter”.

From 1921 Klee taught at the Bauhaus. This was an art and design school. Later he became a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1931.

However the rise of the Nazis brought hardship. Klee’s art was labeled degenerate. He was dismissed from his position. In 1933 Klee returned to Bern.

Despite facing adversity Klee continued to create. Even as a serious illness started to take hold. His later works display remarkable depth. They reflect his inner world.

Paul Klee died in 1940. His application for Swiss citizenship was still pending. He left behind an impressive body of work. This work continues to inspire artists and art lovers today.

The Wohnhaus Paul Klee is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of artistic integrity. It is a symbol of creative exploration. It is a symbol of a spirit that persevered. Klee’s legacy lives on in his art. It also remains within these walls.
