By the 1940s it held 18000 fans. World War II caused major damage. Rebuilding began in earnest in the 1950s. A new main stand opened in 1950. Capacity soared to 30000.
The stadium’s record attendance was set just a year later. 30000 fans packed in to see Holstein Kiel play HSV. It was an unforgettable match. The atmosphere must have been electric.
Floodlights were installed later. The stadium was renamed Holstein-Stadion. For decades the club drew smaller crowds. By the 1990s the stadium was dilapidated. Talk of redevelopment or a new stadium happened but action remained slow. It wasn’t until 2005 that the situation became urgent. The German FA declared the stadium unfit for matches. The need for immediate action was apparent.
Two new covered stands were quickly built. They opened in 2006. More improvements followed. In 2017 Holstein Kiel announced plans for further expansion. A new East Stand raised the capacity to 15000. The stadium’s transformation was complete in 2018.
