Guilherme Gomes Fernandes helped establish the Volunteer Firefighters Association in 1874. He also founded the Public Salvation Corps. In 1877, he became Commander of the Fire Department. Then in 1885, he was appointed Inspector of Fires for Porto.

He even created the newspaper “O Bombeiro Voluntário”. It was published from 1877 to 1890. Imagine the impact of his journalism. It promoted fire safety and volunteerism.

Guilherme Gomes Fernandes was a key figure in fighting the Baquet Theater fire in 1888. His bravery and leadership were evident. His efforts earned him the title “Master”. He received national and international awards.

But Guilherme Gomes Fernandes’ impact stretched beyond Porto. He helped establish the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Viana do Castelo. He also assisted in creating the New Firefighters of Aveiro.

In 1893, Guilherme Gomes Fernandes organized the first Congress of Portuguese Firefighters in Porto. He also led a team in the International Tournament in London. The team secured first place.

Another international competition took place in Lyon France. His team secured second place. Then came the International Contest of Paris in 1900. Guilherme Gomes Fernandes’ team won. They extinguished a simulated fire in record time. The team finished the task in just 2 minutes and 56 seconds. Spectators called them “firefighter cats.” The President of France Émile Loubet praised their skill. He said to tell the Portuguese government. He said if Portugal needs anything from France, send their firefighters as ambassadors.

Sadly Guilherme Gomes Fernandes passed away in Lisbon in 1902. He was only 52 years old. He died after a surgery. Yet his legacy lives on.

Bento Cândido da Silva created A Guilherme Gomes Fernandes Plaque. It was inaugurated in 1915. The square was named in his honor. This shows the high esteem for him. He was more than a firefighter. He was a hero.
