Imagine paying for dinner simply by passing through a place. That’s part of the story of Parada de Todeia.

Parada de Todeia is more than just a name. It is a place with Roman roots. It is a parish in the municipality of Paredes. This land holds stories etched in stone and whispered by the Sousa River.

Its name hints at its past. Parada once meant a meal. This meal was a tribute that locals gave visiting lords. Over time, meals turned into money a payment imposed by rulers. Todeia might come from “Thadeu” a holy name. Another idea suggests Todeia means “of all” or “universal.” Or perhaps from Tutella, a Roman goddess protecting the harvest.

The story of Parada de Todeia stretches back to Roman times. Proof lies in its Roman necropolis. Mendes Correia discovered it in 1921. This discovery included an open village and three burial sites. In 1071, D. Toda Ermides donated an estate in “Parada”. This estate was near Vandoma Castle. People believe this is today’s Parada de Todeia.

The parish is also known for agriculture. Vineyards dominate the landscape. But industry is growing. Wood transformation and civil construction are becoming important.

The main church is a sight. Blue and white tiles cover its front. They depict sacred images. The church tower has three stories. Behind the church stands an ancient cork oak. A plaque honors D. António Barbosa Leão.

The Capela do Solar dos Chãos also has tile-covered frontage. The date 1895 is inscribed above its door. Also worth seeing are the Casa de Ribeiro de Cima. Locals call its viewpoint the Castle.

Traditions run deep in Parada de Todeia. Saint Martin of Tours is the patron saint. His feast is on November 11. This coincides with new wine season.

Parada de Todeia also has active community groups. These include sports, cultural and social associations. Also a parents association for the local school. They also have a Philharmonic association and development associations.

Though small with about 1,792 residents in 2021 it has a rich history. From Roman settlements to agricultural traditions Parada de Todeia offers a glimpse into Portugal’s layered past.
