Was it faith, or was it the very earth itself that held the Virgen de Chapi here? We stand at the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Chapi, a place chosen not by human hands, but by a force far greater. The Virgen de Chapi, a manifestation of the Virgin Mary, holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Arequipa. Her sanctuary lies about 90 kilometers outside the city, in the arid valley separating Arequipa and Moquegua. The story begins in the 18th century, though its roots likely reach further back. Pilgrims have long journeyed to this remote location to pay homage to the Virgen. The image of the Virgen de Chapi, perhaps brought from Spain by Franciscan or Jesuit missionaries, originally resided in a small chapel in the valley. The exact origins remain shrouded in some mystery. But the story of how the Virgen chose her sanctuary is nothing short of captivating. The decision was made to move the image from the valley to Sogay. A procession set off carrying the statue. But after just a few kilometers, the journey came to an abrupt halt. Some accounts speak of a sudden ash storm, making it impossible to see. Others recall the statue becoming impossibly heavy, refusing to move. Whatever the exact events, those present saw it as a sign. The Virgen de Chapi had chosen to stay. A humble shelter, a “chujlla,” was built to protect the image. A small chapel followed, only to be destroyed by an earthquake in 1868. The current Templo Viejo, the “Old Church,” rose from the ruins shortly after. Constructed with sillar brought from a nearby quarry, it embodies the devotion of the people of Chapi. The Virgen de Chapi’s image miraculously survived the earthquake, further cementing her status as a protector. Even today, thousands make the pilgrimage during her feast days in May and September. The journey, often made on foot, echoes the original procession’s interrupted journey. As you stand here, imagine the scene. The wind whipping through the valley, the dust and ash swirling. The weight of the statue, a symbol of faith unshakeable. The Virgen de Chapi stands as a testament to the power of belief. Her sanctuary, a place chosen not by chance, but by divine will, continues to draw the faithful.
