Did you know that the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque stands as a testament to faith and generosity? Its imposing structure dominates the Riyadh skyline. This magnificent mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living breathing story etched in stone and prayer.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque a Sunni Islam mosque located in the Al Jazirah neighborhood of Riyadh. It opened its doors in 2004. Its construction was primarily funded by the generous Sulaiman bin Abdulaziz Al Rajhi. He envisioned a place of worship that would be both grand and welcoming. The mosque’s architecture is a stunning blend of traditional and modern influences. It incorporates elements of Andalusian Moorish Revival style.

This architectural marvel boasts a capacity of 20000 worshippers. Its interior spans a vast 13260 square meters. The mosque is one of the largest in Riyadh. In fact it is considered one of the largest mosques in all of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.

But the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque is more than its size and beauty. Its history unfolds in countless stories. Initially the mosque replaced an older mosque. This older mosque also bore the same name. It had been located in the east of the Al Safa neighborhood since 1985. The new mosque however added a unique dimension. It started providing crucial Islamic funerary services. These services include ritual baths and prayers. Previously this service was handled by a facility in the Al Rabwah neighborhood.

The inauguration of the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque in 2004 was a significant event. Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz then governor of Riyadh presided over the ceremony. Soon after the mosque opened a surprise occurred. Street vendors turned the mosque’s eastern parking lot into a bustling open-air market. The resulting overcrowding caused problems. The Al Riyadh daily newspaper reported the issue. They called on the city’s municipal authorities to address the situation.

The mosque’s library opened in 2005. It initially housed 3000 books. By 2013 this number had grown to around 16000 books and 47000 volumes. This library is a vital resource for religious study and scholarship.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque has also served as a place of mourning. In 2011 it hosted the funeral prayers of Saleh bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi. Saleh was a prominent businessman and philanthropist and founder of Al Rajhi Bank. Two years later the mosque hosted the funeral prayers of Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi. Mohamed was the brother of both Saleh and Sulaiman Al Rajhi.

The Al Rajhi Grand Mosque was briefly closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Saudi government imposed restrictions. Gatherings were banned nationwide. The mosque reopened later that year. Worshippers were allowed back in limited numbers. Social distancing was mandatory. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs then designated Al Rajhi Grand Mosque as one of twelve mosques in Riyadh for funerary rites. This decision helped limit the spread of COVID-19.

Even in popular culture the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque has a presence. It appeared in the 2023 Indian film Dunki. The film however incorrectly showed it as part of Jeddah’s skyline.

Here before us stands the Al Rajhi Grand Mosque. It is a beacon of faith a testament to generosity and a historical landmark. Its story is far from over. It continues to play a vital role in the community. It remains a place of worship reflection and remembrance for generations to come.
