Hidden within the unassuming exterior of the Edison Battery Company Building lies a tale of innovation and industrial might. Thomas Edison, the wizard of Menlo Park, sought to create a “cement and iron structure” that would defy the ravages of time. He envisioned a building as enduring as the Roman baths, a testament to his belief in the power of concrete. Constructed between 1909 and 1914, the Edison Battery Company Building stands as the last vestige of his sprawling industrial complex in West Orange. This colossal structure housed over 800 workers who toiled tirelessly to produce the Edison A4 nickel-iron alkaline storage battery. This revolutionary battery, initially designed for delivery trucks, became a cornerstone of Edison’s manufacturing empire. By the 1930s, the factory, nicknamed the “Million Cell Plant”, churned out an astounding one million batteries annually. Production continued until 1965 under the Exide brand, a testament to the enduring legacy of Edison’s invention. The Edison Battery Company Building, with its utilitarian design and large windows, captured the attention of European architects. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, bore witness to the rise and fall of Edison’s industrial empire. The building faced an uncertain future as the surrounding complex fell into disrepair. By 2003, the Edison Battery Company Building stood vacant and neglected, a stark reminder of a bygone era. However, like Edison himself, the building possessed a remarkable resilience. A wrecking ball, it is said, bounced harmlessly off the reinforced concrete three times, a testament to the strength of Edison’s vision. The building persevered, awaiting its second act. In 2016, the Edison Battery Company Building began a remarkable transformation. The daunting task of restoring the aging facade and replacing the numerous 10-foot windows fell to a dedicated team. Matching the original pinkish-tan color and adhering to historical preservation guidelines presented unique challenges. Despite the complex structural geometry and the varying ceiling heights, the building was meticulously renovated. The Edison Battery Company Building was reborn as The Residences at Edison Lofts. The once-industrial space now houses modern apartments and penthouses, blending historical charm with contemporary luxury. The building, once a symbol of industrial progress, now stands as a vibrant mixed-use space, a testament to the enduring power of innovation and adaptation.
