Sensing the cool spray on your face transports you to a Madrid of old. The Fuente de los Galápagos whispers tales of tortoises and transformations. This isn’t just a fountain. It’s a story etched in stone and water.

The Fuente de los Galápagos was designed by Ventura Rodríguez in 1772. It once graced the corner of Hortaleza and Santa Brígida streets. It was nestled against the old Escuelas Pías de San Antón. Imagine this spot centuries ago. The fountain was more than decoration. It was a vital source of water for the community.

Its original design featured an elaborate architectural backdrop. The fountain had a faux opening with rusticated stonework. A semi-cylindrical limestone structure stood before it. This structure boasted a molded cornice and a cupola. Tortoises climbed upon it, giving the fountain its name. A jar with garlands topped the entire composition.

But time and traffic brought change. In the 19th century, the Fuente de los Galápagos was altered. Its size was reduced to ease traffic flow. The arched structure was removed. The basin was made smaller. Two dolphins replaced the tortoises in the false opening. It became known as the Fountain of the Dolphins of San Antón. The original structure was lost to time.

Now, let’s fast forward to the 1990s. A large-scale model of the fountain in its altered state found a home in the Museo de la Ciudad. When the museum closed, the model was relegated to a municipal warehouse. Its future seemed uncertain.

But Ventura Rodríguez’s tercentenary in 2017 sparked a revival. The Asociación de Amigos del Palacio de Boadilla del Monte organized an exhibition. It featured the architect’s work. The maquette of the Fuente de los Galápagos was included.

Recognizing the historical importance, a restoration project began. The goal was to restore the fountain to its original glory. The modern 3D printing and traditional sculpting skills were used. The missing arch was recreated. Miguel Sobrino sculpted the tortoises by hand. The dolphins were removed. The Fuente de los Galápagos was reborn in miniature.

After the exhibition, the maquette needed a permanent home. The COAM, located in the old Escuelas Pías de San Antón, was a perfect fit. In early 2020, the model was moved to Calle de Hortaleza. It stands there today.

So, as you stand here, remember the journey of the Fuente de los Galápagos. From a functional fountain to a forgotten model and a restored treasure, it embodies Madrid’s history. It reflects the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage. The tortoises may be gone from the original, but their story lives on in this enduring symbol of Madrid.
