Fancy a refreshing dip? Here at Stausee Rabenstein, you can escape the city bustle. This lake is not just a body of water. It is a local recreation gem in Chemnitz.
Stausee Rabenstein’s story began between 1972 and 1976. It was created as part of the municipal operation “Naherholungszentrum Oberrabenstein”. In 1976, the Stausee Rabenstein was opened as a swimming lake. Rowing was also offered.
The “Naherholungszentrum Oberrabenstein” once included a campsite. It also featured a nudist beach with a sauna. A wild game enclosure with riding and driving facilities was part of it too. After the German reunification, the center was dissolved. Its individual parts were assigned to other municipal operations. Some parts were privatized.
Today, Stausee Rabenstein remains a popular spot for swimming. Its water quality is regularly checked and has been proven very good. Notably, it boasts Germany’s longest stainless steel water slide. The area is part of the Rabenstein leisure region. It offers diverse leisure and recreation options.
Around Stausee Rabenstein, you will find Burg and Schloss Rabenstein. There is also a sauna landscape and a climbing forest. A campsite with bungalows is available. The panoramic trail over the old Rabenstein Viaduct offers great views. The Wildgatter Oberrabenstein is nearby. South of this region lies the Chemnitz Zoo. The Felsendome Rabenstein, a former lime mine, is a sight to behold. Hikers can explore the Rabensteiner Wald. Totenstein, its highest elevation, provides many opportunities for relaxation.
The Stausee Rabenstein area is fenced. During summer, an entrance fee is required. The municipal Eissport- und Freizeit GmbH manages the facilities. The Tränkbach and Eisenbach streams feed the lake. The barrier is a rock fill dam.
The lake covers seven hectares. It can store 0.23 million cubic meters of water.
Active visitors can enjoy table tennis and volleyball. For children, there is a giant slide and a pirate playground. If you like to keep it natural, there is a nudist beach. Two snack stands and a beach bar provide refreshments.
Right next door, you can find a climbing forest. Many hiking and cycling trails await. The legendary “Heavy 24” mountain bike race also passes by here.
The Bistro at Stausee Rabenstein is open to all. It is accessible from the parking lot. Here, you can enjoy hot and cold drinks. Warm meals, salads, coffee, and ice cream are served. Next to it, there is a public aviation playground. Minigolf equipment can be rented at the bistro.
The terrace offers over 200 seats. Enjoy the view of the lake. Whether currywurst, fries, salad, or ice cream, you will find something you like. There are also three other snack stands in the bath area.
Please note, dogs are not allowed at Stausee Rabenstein.
