In the heart of San Diego, a beacon of hope has shone for nearly a century. God’s Extended Hand Church, located at 1625 Island Avenue, has been a sanctuary for the hungry and homeless since 1924. Imagine stepping back in time to the Roaring Twenties. The city is bustling with newfound energy after the First World War. Amidst this backdrop of change and growth, God’s Extended Hand Church opens its doors, offering a warm meal and a place of respite to those in need. The church’s commitment to serving the community has remained unwavering throughout the decades. Every Wednesday, volunteers from various Orthodox parishes across San Diego County gather at God’s Extended Hand Church. They work together through FOCUS, preparing and serving meals, and extending a helping hand to those who need it most. Teenagers and young adults are encouraged to volunteer on the first Wednesday of each month. The congregants of St. Basil’s contribute their time and effort on the third and fourth Wednesdays. If there’s a fifth Wednesday in a month, all parishes are called upon to volunteer. This collective effort ensures a consistent and reliable source of support for the community.
