Is it possible for a tomb to be a paradox? Here at the Chengdu Yongling Museum, you’ll witness exactly that. This museum isn’t just a collection of artifacts. It’s a window into a forgotten kingdom, built around the final resting place of Wang Jian, the founding emperor of the Former Shu state. Wang Jian, a figure shrouded in equal parts legend and history, ruled during a time of upheaval in 10th century China. Unlike most emperors who opted for grand underground tombs, Wang Jian chose a different path. His mausoleum, the heart of the Chengdu Yongling Museum, stands as the only known above-ground imperial tomb in China. Why? He believed that the damp Chengdu soil wouldn’t afford him a peaceful afterlife underground. As you walk the grounds, imagine the splendor of his court. The murals inside the mausoleum depict 24 female musicians and dancers, frozen in time, a testament to the music and artistry that Wang Jian held dear. And there, in the back chamber, sits Wang Jian himself, immortalized in a stone statue, the only one of its kind discovered in an emperor’s tomb. Though the Former Shu state was short-lived, lasting only from 907-925 AD, the treasures unearthed from Wang Jian’s tomb paint a vivid picture of a prosperous kingdom. The craftsmanship of the jade belt, the symbolism of the jade seal carved with a dragon and a rabbit, representing both emperor and the year of his birth, they all whisper tales of a bygone era. The Chengdu Yongling Museum isn’t just a museum. It’s a journey through time, a chance to connect with the ambition, artistry, and legacy of Wang Jian, the emperor who dared to defy tradition, even in death.
