Barbing, a town whispered to have been touched by emperors and shaped by the currents of the Danube. Here, east of Regensburg, where the Walhalla watches from its hilltop, Barbing unfolds its story. Barbing’s roots run deep, reaching back to prehistoric times and the Roman era. The very name, with its “-ing” suffix, speaks of Bavarian settlers who made this land their own centuries ago. Barbing first appears in written records around 790, mentioned in Abbot Urolf’s inventory of goods. The town’s history intertwines with significant moments in German history. Near Barbing, at Kreuzhof, Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa is said to have mediated a dispute between two powerful figures, Heinrich the Lion and Heinrich Jasomirgott, in 1156. This pivotal event led to the separation of Austria from Bavaria, forever changing the map of Europe. The Kreuzhofkapelle stands as a silent witness to this history. Barbing wasn’t just a backdrop for grand events. A noble family, the Barbingers, held sway here from the 12th century, their presence marked by a lowland castle. Later, the castle passed into the hands of the Regensburg bishopric. Over the centuries, Barbing saw the ebb and flow of power, becoming part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810. King Ludwig I, with his eye for grandeur, commissioned the straight Walhallastraße, linking Obertraubling and Barbing, offering a dramatic vista of the Walhalla monument. Modern Barbing blends its historical legacy with the vibrancy of a thriving community. The old castle now serves as the town hall, a symbol of continuity amidst change. The Catholic Parish Church of St. Martin, a gothic and baroque masterpiece, stands at the heart of the community. The Sarchinger Weiher, a former quarry turned recreational lake, offers a refreshing escape, while the “Rinsen,” a natural area along the Danube’s old waterways, reminds visitors of the enduring power of nature. Today, Barbing thrives as a blend of old and new. Gewerbegebiete, commercial areas, have sprung up, offering employment opportunities and contributing to the town’s economic growth. Yet, Barbing has retained its charm, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and Bavarian hospitality.
