Patriots Point Development Authority created the museum in the 1970s. Their goal was to establish a naval and maritime museum on Charleston Harbor. The centerpiece was to be the World War II aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown.
Since opening in 1976, Patriots Point has welcomed over 300,000 visitors annually. The USS Yorktown is a National Historic Landmark. The USS Yorktown is the heart of Patriots Point. It was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the Navy. The ship earned 11 battle stars during World War II. It later served in the Vietnam War. The Yorktown even recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts. It was decommissioned in 1970 and dedicated to the museum in 1975. This was on the 200th anniversary of the United States Navy.
