Across the Griboedov Canal stands the Alarchin Bridge. Its elegant form belies a history rich in transformations and untold stories. This isn’t just any bridge. The Alarchin Bridge is a silent witness to centuries of Saint Petersburg life.

The Alarchin Bridge first appeared in 1753. A simple wooden structure it connected Kolomensky Island and Pokrovsky Island. This early bridge lasted for decades. It served the growing needs of the city. However it was not the magnificent structure we see today.

Between 1783 and 1785 the bridge underwent its first major transformation. Built in the style of the Pikalov Bridge it featured three spans. Wooden beams rested on sturdy stone pillars. Granite faced these pillars adding a touch of grandeur. The bridge boasted a central lift span a clever engineering marvel of its time. Its width was only 10.2 meters. Granite obelisks topped with lanterns stood on the intermediate supports. Simple railings completed the design.

The 19th century saw another reconstruction. The central lift span was replaced by a fixed wooden beam. This made the bridge more convenient but less remarkable. This change reflected the evolving needs of the city. The bridge remained a vital artery connecting the islands.

Then came the early 20th century. In 1906-1907 engineers V A Bers and A P Pshenitsky teamed up with architect A I Zazersky. They oversaw a complete transformation. The aging wooden superstructure was replaced with a riveted metal one. This created the iconic Alarchin Bridge we admire today. The bridge’s seven main beams are a testament to this upgrade. The sidewalks were cleverly extended onto consoles widening the bridge. The granite obelisks and lanterns were moved to the abutments. This increased the bridge’s length to 26.5 meters and its width to 15.8 meters. The simple railings were also replaced by new forged metal ones.

The bridge’s enduring name is a curious twist of fate. Historians believe Alarchin is a mispronunciation of Aladchanin. Aladchanin was a famed shipwright who lived nearby. His house stood a silent neighbor to the bridge for years. This intriguing history adds layers to the Alarchin Bridge story.

The Alarchin Bridge also played a role during the Siege of Leningrad. Near the bridge a grim scene unfolded. An open-air morgue operated on Maklina Prospect. It received the bodies of those who perished. This tragic fact casts a shadow over the bridge’s long history.

Further restorations followed. In 1953 architect A L Rotach restored the stand lamps and lanterns. In 1969 the granite obelisks’ ends were gilded. Then in 1995 Washington-style lights were added. A granite drainage gutter was restored in 1996. This ongoing maintenance ensured the Alarchin Bridge’s enduring beauty and resilience.

The Alarchin Bridge serves as a reminder. It reminds us of Saint Petersburg’s resilience and the continuous evolution of the city. This beautiful and historically significant bridge continues to grace the Griboedov Canal. It stands as a testament to engineering skill and historical significance. Its story unfolds before our eyes. And now you know more about the Alarchin Bridge than most.
