The bridge is officially named Norderelbbrücke K6. The K stands for Kunstbauwerk. This means engineered structure. Construction occurred between 1959 and 1963. It was part of a southern bypass around Hamburg. It was also Hamburg’s first major river bridge built after World War II.
Following a competition in 1958, 22 proposals were submitted. Rheinstahl Union Brückenbau AG won the contract. Their design featured a cable-stayed bridge. Hellmut Homberg oversaw the structural testing. Architects Egon Jux and Harro Freese contributed to the bridge’s design. The initial construction cost 14 million DM.
The Moorfleeter Brücke has a rich history. In 1978, noticeable sagging required attention. A support was installed under the middle opening. By 1983, the bridge handled approximately 57,000 vehicles daily. Trucks accounted for about 22 percent of the traffic.
Extensive renovations and modifications followed between 1984 and 1986. These cost 33 million DM. The pylons and cables were replaced. The road was rebuilt to accommodate three lanes in each direction. This was done without adding shoulders.
Since the 2010s, the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media has listed the bridge as a cultural monument. It bears the number 14429.
In May 2015, workers repaired cracks in the stabilization elements. Due to the bridge’s condition and planned expansion of the A1 autobahn, a replacement is planned. This will consist of two separate structures. Traffic had grown to over 100,000 vehicles per day by 2010.
The Moorfleeter Brücke features a cable-stayed design with five spans. The total length reaches 410.8 meters. The central span over the Norderelbe stretches 171.9 meters. Two 53-meter-high pylons support the structure. They have a symmetrical cable arrangement. The bridge deck is 30.6 meters wide. It is 3 meters high.
The original cable system had two splayed bundles. These were guided over deflection saddles on the pylon at heights of 17.68 meters and 22.88 meters. They anchored together on the bridge girder 64 meters away. After reconstruction, two cable strands each with four individual cables now run parallel. This arrangement results in greater structural stiffness.
The pylon piers rest on caissons. Crews assembled the bridge using temporary supports in the side spans. They built the main span using cantilever construction with auxiliary bracing. A floating crane lifted and installed the assembly pieces, some up to 32 meters long.
Plans for a replacement structure emerged in 2018 as part of the A1 expansion. A design competition selected the joint venture of Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner and Gerkan, Marg and Partner. Construction may begin as early as 2024.
