High above the valley stands Augustusburg a town named for its majestic castle. This isn’t just any castle. It’s a hunting lodge a testament to the Saxon electors’ love of the chase. Imagine Elector Augustus I commissioning this grand structure in 1568.

Augustusburg Castle wasn’t built on an empty site. Before it stood Schellenberg another castle. That earlier fortress met its end in 1547. The new hunting lodge however quickly took its place. It even adopted the name Augustusburg in 1575. The town itself only changed its name from Schellenberg in 1899.

The castle’s beauty is more than skin deep. Inside you’ll find Europe’s most impressive collection of motorcycles. Thousands of fans gather here. They celebrate the history of this exciting mode of transportation. But that’s not all.

Augustusburg Castle houses several museums. There is one devoted to hunting and falconry. Another showcases historic coaches. The Venus Hall is a masterpiece. Its complete wall paintings depict a ‘Venus mountain’. It’s a unique example of 16th-century mural art. This marvel is unparalleled in the German-speaking world.

The town itself suffered greatly in 1831. A devastating fire destroyed much of Augustusburg including the original St Peter’s Church. The church was painstakingly rebuilt between 1840 and 1845. Today the town center is charming with its narrow lanes and market square.

A funicular railway adds to the magic. It connects Augustusburg to Erdmannsdorf. This ride offers breathtaking views of the castle and surrounding area. The funicular opened in 1911. It provides easy access to the Zschopau Valley Railway.

Beyond the history and museums the castle has a hidden gem. A falconer regularly displays his birds at the castle. It’s a thrilling experience for visitors young and old. So explore Augustusburg. Discover the beauty of its castle and the charm of its town. A journey through time awaits you.
