Samdech is an honorific. It is bestowed by the King of Cambodia. It recognizes significant contributions to the nation. Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo is a longer title. It means Lord Supreme Military Commander.

In 2019, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen inaugurated buildings at Hun Sen Cham Yeam School. This was in Koh Kong province. He expressed appreciation for the school’s educational achievements. The buildings included a school building, a dormitory and two libraries. Two school offices were also added. These improvements resulted from the Prime Minister’s visit in 2016. During the inauguration, Samdech Techo Hun Sen decided to provide two more school buildings. He also promised a dormitory for the school.
Samdech Hun Sen’s influence extends beyond Cambodia. In Bamako Mali, there is a school. It is named Complexe Scolaire Samdech HUN SEN. This school complex highlights humanitarian collaboration between Cambodia and Mali. Eva Mysliwiec founded the school. She was an American humanitarian. She worked in Cambodia for decades.
Mysliwiec met Prime Minister Hun Sen. She informed him about her project in Bamako. He offered to help finance the school. He was proud to assist others. The Samdech Hun Sen school complex was built in 2013. It was inaugurated in 2014. Initially, it had 60 primary school students. Today it provides education to around 440 students. 51 percent of them are girls.
Cambodia’s aid enabled the construction. The school became self-sufficient in 2018. It manages a small margin. This margin provides scholarships. It supports girls who cannot afford the school fee. Every morning, two national flags are raised. They are the flags of Mali and Cambodia. Students learn about Cambodia’s history. They even correct their parents’ pronunciation of Samdech.
Classes are taught in French. This unites different ethnic groups. The school aims to give children a solid base. It seeks to form conscious citizens. These citizens will give back to their society. A child’s government is set up. Students vote each year. They elect students for minister positions. This teaches them about democracy.
The school is nationally recognized. It has a good reputation. Students often win academic prizes. Some obtain scholarships for studies abroad. The Complexe Scolaire Samdech HUN SEN is a rare tale. It shows mutual aid between two emerging countries.
