Ever witnessed water defy logic? Here at the Tide of Euripus, the sea currents change direction multiple times a day. This narrow strait separates Euboea from mainland Greece. Imagine standing here centuries ago. People have been baffled by this strange phenomenon for millennia.

The Euripus Strait is about 8 kilometers long. At its narrowest, it’s only 40 meters wide. But it is the strong tidal currents that truly define the Tide of Euripus. These currents can reach speeds of up to 12 kilometers per hour. They reverse direction multiple times a day, sometimes more than seven.

The ancient Greeks were fascinated by the Tide of Euripus. They struggled to understand its unpredictable nature. Legend says that Aristotle himself tried to solve the mystery. Frustrated by his failure, he supposedly threw himself into the strait. The true cause of the reversing currents remained a puzzle for centuries.

The name Euripus comes from ancient Greek. It means “any strait or narrow sea where the flux and reflux is violent”. The word combines “well” and “swing or force with which anything is thrown”. This perfectly describes the Tide of Euripus.

Chalcis is the main port on the Euripus Strait. It has been a vital trading center since ancient times. A movable bridge spans the strait here. The first bridge was built in 411 BCE. Today, there are actually two bridges. The old bridge is in the middle of the town. It can slide away to allow ships to pass. A newer cable-suspended bridge was built to the south in 1992.

The Euripus has seen many changes over time. Around 6000 years ago, an earthquake opened the strait. In 411 BC, the Euboeans tried to close it. They wanted to join Boeotia and escape Athenian rule. They built a dike, but had to leave gaps for the tides. This made the current even stronger.

Over the centuries, the channel has widened. In the 16th century, the narrow channel was widened. It then allowed a galley to pass through. Today, the Euripus Strait continues to fascinate. Its strong currents and rich history make it a unique place. The Tide of Euripus remains a testament to nature’s power and mystery. So take a moment to appreciate the ever-changing waters of the Tide of Euripus.
