Nagorny District is in the Southern Administrative Okrug. It is one of Moscow’s 125 districts. Nagorny District covers 5.42 square kilometers. That is about 2.09 square miles.
Nagorny District sits on a hill. From Nagornaya metro station, you can see both Moscow TV towers. The Shukhov TV tower is closer to the Kremlin. The Ostankino TV tower is far to the north.
Residential buildings began here in the early 1960s. Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev led the USSR then. You can easily spot the differences between “Khrushchev” and “Brezhnev” buildings.
The western border touches the Korobkov Gardens. The Gardens date back to the second half of the 19th century. Korobkov owned a local brick factory. The eastern border reaches the Pavelets railway lines. These lines were laid in 1900. They connect to one of Moscow’s nine railway stations. The Warsaw Road also forms part of the border. It was built in the 19th century. Poland was then part of the Russian Empire.
Before the 1960s, the Korobkov Gardens dominated Nagorny District. There were four ponds. These ponds still exist today. As the district developed, the gardens shrank westward. Modern buildings now stand beside Soviet-era structures. You will see five-story and twelve-story houses.
Near the northern edge stood Verkhniye Kotly village. It existed from the Middle Ages until 1932. A smelter and a brick factory operated here in the 20th century. In the early 1980s, the grey metro line opened. It included Nagornaya and Nakhimovsky Prospekt stations.
Key roads include Electrolyte Passage. It forms an H shape. Simferopolsky Passage and Kryvyi Rih street are also important. Simferopol is in Crimea. Kryvyi Rih is a city in Eastern Ukraine.
Several institutes are located at the edges of Nagorny District. These include the Institute of Refractory Metals and Hard Alloys. Also, the Institute of Technical Physics and Automation, and the Institute of Aviation Technologies.
For winter sports, visit the KANT Ski Resort. It opened in 1989 due to the area’s ravines. The Kotlovka River flows here. It is the third-largest tributary of the Moskva River. Its valley is a natural monument.
Two churches have been built recently in Nagorny District. A wooden church honors Theodor Ushakov. Another church honors Euphrosyne of Moscow. She was the wife and widow of Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Near her church, a pond is used for baptismal fonts every January 19.
