It began in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy’s fury in 2012. Residents, stripped of their photos and memories by the storm’s flood and fire, banded together. They met in a local church, itself bearing the scars of Sandy’s five-foot floodwaters. Their goal was to preserve Breezy Point’s past for generations to come. The Breezy Point Historical Society now safeguards thousands of digitized photographs, a testament to the community’s enduring spirit. The Breezy Point Watchtower stands as a silent witness to this history. It has seen the community rise from the ashes, stronger and more united. The Breezy Point Watchtower also overlooks the important ecological haven of Breezy Point Tip. It’s a crucial breeding ground for threatened and protected shorebirds like the piping plover, the American oystercatcher, the black skimmer, and the common and least terns. This area, owned by the federal government, remains largely untouched by development. The Breezy Point Watchtower, therefore, stands not only as a beacon of the past but also as a guardian of the future. It symbolizes the community’s strength, its commitment to its history, and its dedication to preserving the natural beauty that surrounds it.
