“Copper or silver mines?” That’s what Henry Hudson’s first mate thought when he saw Castle Point on Hudson back in 1609. Today, we know it’s not precious metals but a treasure of history and views. This is Castle Point.

Castle Point is the highest point in Hoboken. Its name comes from “Castille Point.” Early sailors thought it looked like the Spanish coast. Picture them, these early navigators, seeing this high crag reminding them of a miniature Rock of Gibraltar.

In 1804, Colonel John Stevens bought the land. He built his estate here. Some considered him a bit mad. He was so ahead of his time. Stevens called his mansion the Castle. Each window offered a beautiful view.

After John’s death, his son Edwin Augustus Stevens took over. In 1853, Edwin built a 40-room mansion called the Stevens Castle. It stood next to the point.

In 1910, Stevens Institute of Technology acquired the Castle. It used the building as a residence and office until 1959. Castle Point is still part of the Stevens campus. It overlooks Sybil’s Cave.

Now, look around you. Castle Point also includes this area and streets like Castle Point Terrace. Notice the yellow brick. Castle Point Park and Castle Point Skate Park sit at the base near the Hudson.

From up here at Castle Point Lookout, you are about 100 feet above sea level. Take in the panoramic views of the Hudson River. You can see New York City and the Hoboken waterfront. It is a perfect spot for photos.

See that cannon? It’s a historical artifact. They say it came from France during the American Revolution. It stands as a symbol of protection for the campus. It is certainly a trademark of this lookout.

Castle Point isn’t just about views. Walking and hiking trails wind through the campus. Explore the natural surroundings. Keep an eye out for birds. Many species frequent this area.

Stevens Institute of Technology uses Castle Point for academic activities. Conferences and meetings often take place here. Students and faculty enjoy the fresh air and views. The campus is known for research. The views from Castle Point inspire the important work happening here.

Colonel John Stevens mapped out part of his land in 1804. He called it “The New City of Hoboken.” Lots were auctioned off in New York City. This sparked interest in what became a famous pleasure ground. Poets, artists, and dreamers loved old New York. They were all drawn to “Hoboken, the Beautiful”.

Castle Point provides a unique blend of history. It also offers natural beauty and intellectual vibrancy. Take a moment to appreciate this special place. Remember the vision of Colonel John Stevens. Think about the sailors who saw a resemblance to their homeland. Castle Point on Hudson is more than just a viewpoint. It is a landmark with a story to tell.
