Ever wonder how a simple request could transform a community. We are standing at Anthony Chiarantano Park. It is a testament to one man’s dedication. This park offers a green space amid the urban landscape.

Anthony Chiarantano Park is named for Anthony Chiarantano. He was a resident of East Flatbush. He was born in 1934 and passed away in 1974. Anthony played a vital role. He was instrumental in the park’s creation.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine East Flatbush in the 1960s. Manufacturing dominated the area. Open spaces were scarce. Families longed for a place to relax and play. Anthony Chiarantano saw this need. He decided to take action.

For years Anthony Chiarantano worked tirelessly. He petitioned the city government. He wanted a neighborhood park. He envisioned a space where children could play. He dreamed of a place where families could gather.

Anthony was not just a dreamer. He was a man of action. He was a telephone company foreman for 18 years. He volunteered for the Catholic Youth Organization. He coached hockey basketball and baseball at Saint Therese de Lisieux. He was also president of the East 43rd Street Block Association. He coached for the 67th Precinct Police Athletic League’s hockey team.

Between 1969 and 1974 Anthony relentlessly pursued his goal. His dedication paid off. The Parks Department signed a 20-year lease. This lease was for a 2.3-acre parcel. The Department of Education owned this land.

Sadly Anthony Chiarantano did not live to see his dream fully realized. He passed away in 1974. However his efforts were not forgotten. In 1977 the park was officially created. It featured a ballfield and an outdoor hockey rink. It was a fitting tribute to his memory.

Today Anthony Chiarantano Park stands as a vibrant community hub. Children laugh as they play. Families picnic on the grass. The ballfield echoes with the sounds of the game. The park provides a space for recreation and relaxation.

Think about Anthony Chiarantano as you wander through this park. He saw a need and worked to fill it. He was a father a coach and a community leader. Anthony Chiarantano Park is a living legacy to his commitment. It reminds us that one person can make a difference. His vision has given joy to countless people.
